Collaboration and exploration are at the heart of this process, with 3 clearly defined phases of activities and deliverables. The goal is to explore opportunities we can develop digital ideas for, then prototype one and develop ideas about how to make your innovation a reality.

Wireless Pest Trap

A Digital to Physical workshop for Orkin

After the introduction to prototyping and a few basic skills exercises involving the Arduino platform, the teams of 3 participants received a secret envelope assignment focused on Quantified Self. They were also given an assortment of brand-based mood boards and body-based mood boards to choose from and to rally their thinking around. The remainder of the day was spent actively designing, crafting and prototyping an interactive product with both digital and physical manifestations. Each team delivered three presentations throughout the afternoon culminating in a final presentation and working prototype – and each team was highly successful.

UX San Francisco 2013

A Digital to Physical workshop for UX San Francisco.

Designers in the quantified self space discover elegant ways to get sensor-based or measured data into their systems so that people can see the invisible parts of life. In many cases, quantified self systems are driven by the desire to change behavior, to reinforce a good behavior or decrease or eliminate a bad behavior. The QS space is on fire right now with startups, big companies, and researchers all racing to uncover methods to reflect back personal data in meaningful ways. Our assignment introduced these concepts and also assigned each team a globally recognized brand and a part of the body as inspiration for their brainstorming (about half kept their brand top of mind as they prototyped).
